A royalty-cleared music licensing platform for television and post-production — where I owned the commercial side: payments, subscriptions and the catalogue people search.

The problem

Licensing music for broadcast is a rights problem dressed as a media problem. The audio is straightforward; knowing precisely what may be aired, by whom and under which certificate is not, and a mistake is a legal one for the customer rather than an inconvenience.

On top of that sit two ordinary but unforgiving jobs. A catalogue of tens of thousands of tracks has to be navigable enough that an editor finds the right one in seconds. And the whole thing has to be sold — subscriptions, single-track purchases, promo codes, renewals — against a rights model where what you are buying is permission, not a file.

What I built

Two years on the Go backend as its largest contributor, working across a team. The commercial half is mine: payment handling, the subscription and purchased-subscription lifecycle, and the reporting exports the business runs on.

So is much of what makes the catalogue usable: the taxonomy of super tags, moods, genres and collections that the library is browsed and filtered through, and the library and sound-set endpoints on top of it.

And the paperwork that makes a licence real: automatic generation of the RAO rights certificates customers need for broadcast, with quarterly licence tracking behind it.

In the Flutter desktop application I built the AI music generation feature: a request goes out to the Suno API, the platform's own server takes the completion callback rather than the app sitting on an open connection, and the finished track comes back into the same window as the licensed catalogue — with waveform display and streaming playback. Generation is slow and fallible, so it is modelled as a job with states rather than as a function call.

The result

A licensing platform with a catalogue of more than thirty-six thousand cleared tracks, desktop applications for macOS and Windows, drag-and-drop into Premiere, Final Cut and DaVinci, and rights certificates generated rather than chased.

Its published client list runs to television channels, the Russian Academy of Sciences' video studios, the Union of Filmmakers and several film schools — an audience with no tolerance for a rights record that turns out to be wrong.
